Install The Last Lanterns
Use Minecraft Java 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.234 and Java 21. Place the mod JAR in the mods folder on both the client and the server. Keep one copy of the mod installed.
No extra mod dependency is required. Shaders are optional; the screenshots on this site use Rev’s Better Shaders 1.1.1 with its Cinematic preset.
- Check the Minecraft and NeoForge versions before starting the game.
- In multiplayer, the server and players need the mod installed.
Find the old road
The twenty sites generate in new Overworld chunks. Already explored terrain is left as it is, so travel beyond the area your world has generated before looking for the new buildings.
The roster contains six dungeons, ten waystations and four smaller discoveries. Each site has eligible biomes and placement checks for dry ground and terrain variation. Visiting an eligible biome gives it a place to generate, not a guarantee that every patch of that biome will contain it.
Small camps, shelters and waystations are useful first stops. Their storage can provide supplies and exploration items before you enter the guarded dungeons. The structure pages list each site’s biomes, inhabitants and inscriptions.
- Search newly generated Overworld terrain.
- Use a site’s biome list when choosing where to explore.
- Structure dimensions describe the full authoring canvas, including air margins; the occupied building can be smaller.
Read and keep the six chapters
A book teaches the Field Journal recipe, and a glass pane teaches the Surveyor’s Lens recipe. Finding a journal teaches all fourteen custom recipes in Minecraft’s normal recipe book. You do not need an extra crafting station.
Hold Use with the Lens in the air for one second to sense nearby inscriptions. A short amber bearing and a direction/distance message point toward a mark, preferring a chapter you have not recorded. The search reaches twenty blocks horizontally and twelve blocks above or below you in the loaded area.
Use the Lens directly on Inscribed Stone or a Relic Plinth to copy its chapter. Open your Field Journal to reread the chapters in any order. Your notes belong to your player and survive death, so a replacement journal displays the discoveries you have already made.
- Sensing a mark does not read it for you; use the Lens directly on it.
- The sensing pulse has a five-second cooldown; let it finish before using the Lens to read a mark. Move through a larger building to search another area.
- A crafted Relic Plinth starts with The Road chapter. Other chapters appear on the inscriptions found around the world.
Leave one light
Some Keeper’s Lanterns have dark glass and cold wicks. Use a Lantern Fragment directly on one to rekindle it permanently. The room gains real light, a short chime answers and nearby resident moths can seek the working lamp.
In survival, one cold lantern uses one fragment. Creative mode keeps the stack, and an already-lit lamp costs nothing. Mining and replacing a Keeper’s Lantern preserves whether it is lit or cold.
- Look for dark glass before spending a fragment.
- Relighting does not produce an item reward.
- Rekindling every lamp is an optional act of exploration, not a world-restoration ending.
Watch before you strike
Guardians show their attacks before they land. The Lantern Sentinel locks its facing before a broad frontal sweep. The Rootbound Keeper marks a fixed circle on the ground before a slam. Cinderbound warn before a narrow forward heat burst.
The Castellan crosses the front in three sweep sectors, reversing the order on its next attack. Stay alert until the final sector has passed. After committing to an attack, guardians lower their pose and armor during recovery.
The warnings give you time to move. Solid cover blocks an attack when it breaks actual line of sight. Your equipment, position and movement still determine the outcome, so take space to read a new guardian before closing in.
- Step sideways out of the Sentinel or Cinderbound warning.
- Leave the Keeper’s marked circle and do not return before the slam.
- Wait for the Castellan’s third sector before using the recovery opening.
Bring something home
The Foundry Hammer is a slow weapon with a charged knockback. Hold Use for at least one second, then release to push creatures in front of you. A charged release costs two durability and has a four-second cooldown; releasing early costs nothing.
Archive Shelves and Supply Crates hold real inventories. Tables, chairs, carved stone, plaster, illuminated windows and roof finials can be crafted for your own builds. Leave headroom for tall finials and chair backs.
The Seal of the Last Keeper comes from the Keep’s reward chest. It is a trophy to bring home; collecting it does not unlock a required quest chain.
- The crafting index shows the exact ingredients and outputs of all fourteen recipes.
- Place storage and furniture where there is room to interact with them.
- Use the Hammer’s charged release when nearby creatures are in front of you and visible.
Meet the Lantern Moth
Lantern Moths are passive residents of the Apiary, Shrine, Infirmary and Market. They remain near home and seek lit Keeper’s Lanterns and Keeper Braziers.
Use honeycomb on a moth for a ten-second calm and glow response. In survival this consumes one honeycomb. Feeding has a sixty-second cooldown, and the timers pause while the moth is unloaded. The interaction does not tame, breed or produce farmable loot.
- A cold Keeper’s Lantern must be rekindled before it attracts a resident moth.
- Give the moth room to fly near its home.
- Honeycomb is a small interaction with a resident, not a repeatable item reward.
A few things to know
The story is optional and can be discovered out of order. Six chapter numbers describe the journal’s organization, not a quest route you must follow through the world.
If you are not finding sites, check that you are exploring new Overworld chunks and the listed biomes. Some candidate positions are rejected by terrain checks, and the larger dungeons are spaced farther apart than roadside discoveries.
If the Lens gives no bearing, move to another part of the building. It senses local inscriptions in the loaded area, not distant structures across the map.
- You can replace a lost journal without losing your recorded chapters.
- Shaders change the presentation; they are not required to play.
- The vessel’s origin and Enna’s fate are left open by the inscriptions.
