Keeper’s Lanterns recur throughout Roadkeeper buildings. A working lantern emits light level 14; a cold one emits no light and has dark glass.
Use a Lantern Fragment on a cold lantern to rekindle it permanently. One fragment is consumed in survival, while an already-lit lantern costs nothing. Mining and placing the lamp again preserves its lit or cold state.
Place in the story
A lantern once meant shelter on the Roadkeepers’ roads. The journal’s opening places that light above a door, and The Road makes tending its wick part of the same duty as keeping bread for strangers.
The cold lamps left in some buildings make that promise visible through its absence. Rekindling one is a practical act of care rather than a new ending: the room becomes lit, but the past described by the inscriptions is not erased.
The Last Light changes the meaning of the repeated lamp. Enna writes that the lanterns came to serve only the Roadkeepers themselves, then asks for the doors to open again. A working lantern therefore belongs to both the network’s old hospitality and the question of whom that hospitality is for.
