Roadkeeper Infirmary

An L-shaped hospice with separate wards, herb walks and a quiet bell cupola.

The Roadkeeper Infirmary has two unequal red-brown gables, a projecting dispensary and an open herb cloister. Beds, washing spaces and medicine shelves occupy separate wings, showing how the hospice once cared for travelers.

A Lantern Moth lives among the site’s working lamps. Its inscription is The Furnace, which places the workers’ flight and failed attempts at containment beside the remains of care and hospitality. Look through the ward and wash areas as well as the entrance rooms when searching the building.

Place in the story

The hospice notice requires neither coin nor a name, and asks only that the lamp be left lit. The ward register repeats the refusal to demand a name, points out water and permits taking what is needed. Beds, wash areas and the herb cloister give those rules a practical setting.

The Furnace chapter records workers fleeing to the keep. Beside it, the infirmary shows what the fellowship had provided before retreat: care available without first establishing who a traveler was. The contrast with the final chapter’s closed doors can be read as an ethical loss: care that once welcomed an unknown traveler has become harder to reach.
