In the story
The first chapter treats a tended wick as part of hospitality. The road’s lamps tell an unknown traveler that shelter is available. The shrine’s Enna’s Record puts the purpose plainly: the road was lit so others could come home. At the crossroads, one light is left for those behind.
Light also belongs to work and communication. The tower answers other lights and records a fourth that has gone dark. The observatory asks for light at a desk. The expedition carries six lanterns underground, while the lodge separately records six lamps issued and five returned. These counts are clues, but a missing lamp is not automatically a missing person or the identified source of every Lantern Fragment.
By The Last Light, the same lamps have changed their meaning: the doors are closed until the lanterns serve only those inside. The last appeal asks that the earlier promise be restored, and the keep’s gate notice reduces that appeal to keeping one light while letting others through. The contrast is about who can benefit from the light, not a new numerical quest to relight the entire world.
Cold Keeper’s Lanterns let you repeat a small part of that work. A fragment repairs a wick, the lamp stays lit and a nearby resident moth may seek it. These are real local responses. They do not reveal the vessel’s nature or trigger the return of the Roadkeepers. The moths and the lit room can be read as signs that care still matters even when the larger story cannot be neatly repaired.
